FS5 thoughts

It will be a strong competition to Canon’s C100 MkII/C300. Downside is the codec with only 100mbit in 4K, which is way too low compared to Canon’s XC10 which has 305mbit 4:2:2 in 4K. I see it more as a replacement for the FS700 and the even the older FS100.

And the new A7S Mark II:

  • 409600 ISO
  • Internal 4K (UHD) XAVC-S 4:2:0 8-bit 60/100mbit
  • HD XAVC-S 4:2:0 8-bit up to 120p 60/100mbit
  • HD AVCHD 4:2:0 8-bit up to 60p 28mbit
  • full sensor readout with no Pixel binning

A7S II thoughts

The Sony A7S Mark II now features 4K (UHD) internally, but with the cavait of the XAVC-S Codec with only 100mbit in 4:2:0 which is much to low for even medium quality 4K video from which you want crop in. The 100mbit will compress small details completely away. See it as a 4K Smartphone camera with swapable lenses.
Other so in HD with 120fps recording speed in 1080p. Thats a nice addition. Take that and a bit better image processing and less noise and you got a nice upgrade to the A7S with a 4K marketing badge on it. Because at this low datarate 4K is just useless.
Eager to await one to test it and take a look and the image.
